Pumpkins

Granny and Boo had a rather fabulous pumpkin harvest this year -- especially since these were all self-seeded. We think they're the Queensland Blue variety, which means they'll make great eating -- especially in soups.
Our little man took the largest to preschool for the 'Interest Basket' (which is esentially show-and-tell). He told me he sat with the heavy pumpkin on his lap during the talk, and could barely draw breath to answer the other children's questions!

Readiness

As Boo grows, I'm discovering that I believe in the concept of 'readiness' for children.
Preschool is one example -- last year he was miserable there, but suddenly this year he's eager to go. This morning a full hour before the doors opened he was excited and ready to leave!
Then last week as we were shopping together, I reached for a package of night-time nappies, and Boo told me he'd decided not to wear nappies anymore. A few days later his little friend Lexa came to stay, and she noticed that he still wore nappies. The next night he refused to put one on at bedtime, so we rushed about and finally found a plastic tablecloth, and covered his mattress with that, a few towels, and flannel sheet. Since then we've had a few accidents, but most mornings the bed is dry.
And suddenly a few days ago he asked to have the training wheels on his bike removed. Since he certainly couldn't ride even with these on, I was reticent, but that afternoon Daddy got a wrench and took them off. Within an hour Boo was riding short distances alone, and by the next afternoon was chasing Daddy around the garden on his bike.
Yesterday he went 'biking' with Granny and Papa around the lake foreshore for several kilometres!

Mother's Group Babies

Aren't they all getting big? And to think, we all met when we had only our first babies -- now what a crowd there is.

Flooded Garden

The recent deluge of rain has created puddles, lakes and streams all over the garden -- perfect for children to explore on a rain walk.

Afterwards it was straight into a hot bath, then dinner wrapped in blankets infront of the television.

Science Museum on a Rainy Day

We'd passed by the Science Museum many times, but after a few rainy days and cabin fever it was just the excuse we needed for an excursion.

While the exhibits were fairly low-key, there was plenty of hands-on fun, and a surprising amount for little people to experiment with.

The highlight of the day was the "liquid Nitrogen" show, which was fairly spectacular, even for adults. Jars exploded, balloons burst, plastic smashed, and eerie waves of cold mist boiled over the floor. Boo and Lexa both loved it!

We'll definately be back -- and since we bought a season pass, this might well become our "rainy-day" place. Better still, the pass also entitles us to a year's free entry at the Maritime and Powerhouse museums in Sydney, so trips to town have just gained another drawcard!

Dishwasher Duty

Not long ago I read a newspaper article that advised parents to give children as many dollars a week of pocketmoney as their age. Four dollars seemed to me an awful lot to hand to Boo at once every Saturday, and I didn't like the idea of 'money for nothing'.
Boo is generally happy to help around the house, and I expect him to pick up his room, put his dirty cups, plates and cutlery away, and help me make beds (he takes great pride is arranging the pillows 'just so'). But now we have added one more task -- emptying the clean dishwasher in the mornings, and it is this job which we have decided to pay for.
Emptying the dishwasher properly takes a small boy at least 10 full minutes. I expect all items (within reason) to be properly stacked and put away, even if that means Boo needs to pull over a chair and stand on it to reach high cupboards. If he does the job with no complaints and asks for minimal help, I pay a premium. I also pay each day once the job has been completed to my safisfaction. And, as a further part of the deal, his earned money can be spent on anything he wishes (even sweets, but only reasonable quantities of those, or some are put away for another day).
So far, this system has worked wonders. Boo's work is actually an enormous help to me, as the job is done well and with pride, and I have time to complete other housework while he is busy. He generally decides to save his money, and last weekend was able to buy a brand new PowerRangers suit (at half price) from Kmart entirely out of his savings.
He's even started asking Granny and Papa if they have any paid jobs for him!
PS In the picture above Lexa stayed the night, and in the morning Boo allowed her to help with his job (he loved explaining just what to do, and directed her very effectively), then they shared the payment.

Grandma's Birthday

Boo and I woke early on Wednesday morning to bake butterfly cakes -- which meant that a certain someone's breakfast consisted almost entirely of licking the whisk and cleaning out the mixing bowl with his tongue! But never mind -- I figure there are enough good things in homemade batter to count towards a 'balanced breakfast', at least occasionally.
We left the cakes to cool and picked up Terese and Nyah for Garden Club, where the day's speaker was to discuss Aquaponics (a combination of Aquaculture & Hydroponics -- which means that fish and plants are grown together, with tanks under the plants) in the clubhouse by the sea. We sipped champagne (tea in my case), ate strawberries and cake, and enjoyed the sweet and busy meeting while the children played lego on the floor like little angels.
After an excursion to the aquaponics garden we took Boo and Nyah for a picnic at the beach -- and to my delight found the most wonderful, shaded, tidal pool just around the corner from the picnic spot. The kids immediately stripped down to undies and paddled and swam in the blissfully warm water while we chatted.
Then home to decorate cupcakes (Boo took charge of this, which accounts for the multitude of coloured sprinkles and golden chocolate heart on each), and set the tea table before Grandma, Granny and Papa arrived.

The Simple Woman's Daybook

Do visit Peggy's to see all the Daybook links this week.
Tuesday February 9, 2010 ...
Outside My Window... The day is sunny and humid, and the wet earth is warm and steaming ...
I am thankful that... Boo went off happily on his second day of preschool -- without even asking for a kiss!
From the kitchen... Chilli basil tofu (one of our favourite dishes) with homemade chilli jam, made at Terese's house on a visit last week ...
I am wearing... stretchy black leggings (suddenly none of my trousers fit!) and a roomy paisley top with an empire line ...
I am creating... cards and paper streamers for Valentine's Day ...
I am going... to spend the day in the office laying out a book ...
I am reading... When a Crocodile Eats the Sun, an heartrending autobiography about the situation in Zimbabwe ...
One of my favorite things... is feeling the first fluttering kicks in my tummy -- not so much like bubbles as a little fish darting and swimming in there ...
Here is a picture thought I am sharing ...

Wild Weather

We've had a host of thunderstorms lately: sticky heat, choppy seas and bouts of drenching rain followed by drizzle.

Boo and I love it!
After storytime at the library on Wednesday we took his scooter down the path to the sea, and dared the waves to reach over the seawall to drench us.

And soon we're off for another rainwalk, so Boo can jump in puddles and christen his new Lightning McQueen wellington boots!

The Best Day Ever

Boo came home from his 'first day' at preschool on Tuesday absolutely bubbling with excitement. It was the "best day ever", and he wanted to know if he could I go tomorrow again?
He enjoyed every bit -- from the story to outdoor play and craft -- and was full of beans and shiny eyed all afternoon. What a change from the last time we tried preschool! Even his teacher commented that he was a different boy now, and had matured incredibly in the past 8 months.
Now I am so glad we stopped when we did, and that he had time to grow up without pressure. It was quite difficult to make that decision at the time, not least because the teachers insisted that with more days (rather than fewer) he would get used to the routine, and that I shouldn't give in to his desires and instead should set the rules and he would eventually just put up with it. We did persevere for a while, but in the end I decided that neither he nor I were happy, and why put ourselves through such an unpleasant time if it wasn't necessary?
Now he's simply 'ready' -- and so am I!

Brunch Get Together

The Show's always a great excuse to meet up with family and friends, and this year we hosted a bring-a-plate Sunday brunch at the cottage on the day after. The weather was glorious, so we all relaxed on the verandah in the cool breeze, and cooked breakfast on the barbecue. Mark, Rach and Tilda were up, as well as the Cheesemans, McPhersons, Gavin and Clair and their girls, and Mum and Dad.

The food was delicious -- everyone brought a speciality (date scones from Cecily, savoury muffins from my mum-in-law, and homemade bread and shortbread from me), and there was plenty of fresh fruit and juice, tea and coffee, and as much sausages and bacon as the children could eat.

After bruch (and before a late lunch of leftovers, as it turned out) the kids swam for hours, slid on the waterslide, and rambled through the garden to take scraps to the chickens. The men went snorkelling for a few hours, while us ladies drank tea and went for strolls, then cooled off with a quick dip in the sparkling pool.

Anniversary

Cheryl
5 June 1971 - 1 February 2007

Morning has broken, like the first morning
Blackbird has spoken, like the first bird
Praise for the singing, praise for the morning
Praise for the springing fresh from the word.

Sweet the rain's new fall, sunlit from heaven
Like the first dewfall, on the first grass
Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden
Sprung in completeness where his feet pass.

Mine is the sunlight, mine is the morning
Born of the one light, Eden saw play
Praise with elation, praise every morning
God's recreation of the new day.
